Mental health treatment focuses on addressing the symptoms of a mental disorder via therapy and medication while helping teens develop the skills needed to cope with symptoms in the long-term. A mood or anxiety disorder does not go away after treatment, and teens and families who come to Visions and work with our staff understand that an important part of treating a mental health disorder is to develop the tools to live with it, seek out support, and continuously strive for improvements in quality-of-life.

An important part of the journey is the Teen Transitional Living Program aspect – the transition from treatment to normal living. Visions offers extended care through our Teen Transitional Living Program, which focuses on an in-depth experience built to walk teens through all crucial stages of the treatment process, from therapy and medication management to developing important coping mechanisms, lesson planning, continuing care, family and peer support, and reintroduction into normal, social living.

Teen Transitional Living Program for Extended Care, Objectives and Goals

Our Teen Transitional Living Program for extended care is organized for adolescents from ages 15 to 18, of all genders. With a minimum length-of-stay of 90 days, this is a longer program focusing on both immediate behavioral and mental health concerns, as well as a framework for continuing care after the program ends. Through our Teen Transitional Living Program, we aim to:

  • Medication management and therapeutic care (family therapy, DBT-informed programing, individual counseling)
  • Symptomatic-based experiential treatments, from art and music therapy to neurotherapy and EMDR
  • Identifying effective coping mechanisms and strategies
  • Continuing education via accelerated learning, ACT/SAT preparation and college planning
  • The continuum of care through recovery community support groups, 12-Steps, and more
  • Ensuring teens health and safety via night staff, round-the-clock crisis intervention teams and property security

    The Road After Treatment

An important part of our extended care program is making sure teens are prepared for the road ahead. Continuing care is an important part of addressing a teen’s mental health because mood and anxiety disorders are often chronic and recurring. We work with teens and their families to find support groups, events, and communities to help them engage with others regularly, feel at home in the company of new and old friends, and feel accepted by their relatives and loved ones. Some of the perks of our extended care program focusing intently on providing continuing care include:

    • Collaborative recovery aftercare planning
    • Alumni fellowship and regularly scheduled meetups and events
    • Helping teens identify high-risk relapse behaviors and situations
    • Developing a support network of close friends and loved ones
    • Ongoing psychiatric and pharmacological help by referral
    • Establishing a network of helpful services within the community

At Visions, we also encourage teens to self-select treatment goals to help them define their own path towards personal growth throughout the program and find ways to explore interests and vocations they might never have considered in the past. An important part of ongoing care is finding ways to avoid falling back on old habits. By working with friends and family, we make sure our extended care program leaves a lasting impression on a teen’s life and helps them continue to carry the lessons and tools they acquire during the program forward throughout their life.
